Vertical take-off of a flapping-wing MAV model

Click here to see the animation Click here to see the animation This is a one-second video clip of our MAV (Model 9) propulsion test device. Here it is configured with a small tail to provide some stability for hovering flight and vertical takeoff. The complete device with tail fins and power-feed wires weighs about 8.5 grams. The stripped model weighs just under 6.5 grams, and produces on the order of 20 grams of thrust. The current configuration is not considered to be optimised, as several key design parameters have yet to be systematically varied.
