The JavaScript Animator was designed to connect a series of discrete images into an animated sequence for display on web-pages. Animations are possible using the GIF89a and MPEG formats as well, but they generally don't provide the VCR-like control over the animation that is possible here. The software has evolved over the years. In its current state, the web-pages are generated by a perl-script which grabs all the necessary information for the sequence from the server, detects the client's browser type, and pushes an appropriate page to them. The graphics were generated using Gimp on a linux PC, and all images are in the PNG format. Earlier versions of this utility used GIF images, but the PNG format is generally more compact, even with 32-bit color. If your ISP supports PHP and Perl, and if you have a use for the animator script, send me a note and I'll give it to you under the general GNU licensing agreement. Happy surfing - Kevin D. Jones |
